Background
There was a reasonable amount of rain and snow fall in winter 2011 on Mt Damavand area. This usually increases the amount of gas emission from the vents in the in following year, also it may increase the hot water temperatures at the flank of southern thermal springs in 2012. We experienced similar events, rain/snow fall in winter 2006 and consequently some more volcanic activities in 2007.

About the Trip Report
This is trip report is made by a group of mountain guides and climbers who have climbed Mt Damavand from the South route on 5 April 2012, it covers the latest information as far as unusual volcanic activity in 2012 is concerned!

Remember these guys are just interested in mountaineering and focused on climbing this beautiful volcano. They are not geologist and nor the experts who studies the history and development of the volcanoes!

Damavand Trip Report
18 April 2012 By Azad Mountaineering Group Iran
This observation indicates a common view since 2007 and signifies Damavand Volcano visually shows the regular white emissions rising about few meters above the summit form the main southern vent. Also unverified new smoke emission is reported on the West face of the mountain by another team.

- For the first time, some new smoke and gas emission is visible and was reported in April 2012 on the western side of the mountain by a mountaineering group, but not verified by other people.
- On 5 April 2012 sulfur dioxide emission was observed on the main Southern vent.
- The southern vent has been active (observed) since an expedition in June 2007.
- This current emission has entered its 5th year.
- The volcano has been on stable condition since 2007.
- Damavand volcano has not shown any signs of major unrest recently.
- There has been no recorded volcanic tremor or earthquakes recently.
- No recent eruptions were observed or occurred at the volcano.
- No new lava flow observed at summit crater or on the flanks.
- There is no ash fall.
- No exclusion zone has been placed around the volcano.

Important Note
- Climbers ascending from the South face are advised to remain at least 50 meters from the southern main vent.

Gravity-driven deformation of Damavand volcano, Iran, detected through InSAR time series

Abstract
The detection and monitoring of gravity-driven volcano deformation are vital for understanding volcanic hazards such as landslides, lateral blasts, and debris avalanches. Although deformation has been detected at several large active volcanoes (e.g., Mount Etna, Vesuvius, Kilauea), these systems also exhibit persistent magmatic activity, obscuring the gravity-driven signals of ground motion.

In this study we present a first interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) deformation time series at the dormant Damavand volcano in northern Iran, over the period A.D. 2003–2008. The high-resolution data show a lateral extension of the volcano at the relative rate of as much as ∼6 mm/yr accompanied by subsidence at the rate of as much as ∼5 mm/yr at the volcano summit. We find that lateral motion of the east flank is more significant than that of the west flank. On the basis of past understanding and modeling of deforming volcanoes elsewhere, we interpret this new evidence to reveal long-term, slow, gravity-driven deformation, possibly in the form of gravitational spreading, at Damavand. This persistent deformation activity is well expressed, although no volcanic activity was ever reported in history. This finding shows that magmatic activity is not required for spreading and highlights the importance of identifying long-lived gravity-driven deformation for hazard assessment at dormant or inactive volcanoes.

Volcanic Activity
Volcanic Activity od Volcano Damavand Iran
Located in middle of Alborz Mountains in northern Iran, this young dormant volcano is approximately 400 km3 and is formed mostly during the Holocene geological time, no historical eruption is recorded, the geologists believe that the last eruption goes back to about 10,000 years ago and the the youngest lava flows date back to approx 7000 years ago and no evidence of eruption in the past 1000 year.

This composite cone stratovolcano started some sign of new activty in spring 2007, the hot springs located on the volcano's south flanks become warmer and a big new vent is formed near the summit crater with high fumarolic activity, it releases a great amount of smoke and hot sulphuric gases.

New activity, the red substance are visible

On 19 June 2007, we saw this new changes for the first time, besides sulphur gas and steam, some red material is coming out of the new vent, we are not certain about this red substance, it does not look like lava but it coud be melted sulphur. We believe this new activity worth some study and research.

Climbing Tip
There is no problem for climbing when the wind is in favuor, but if the wind blows against you, it may cause some problem, either on the south or the east route, so when arriving in this smoke zone, modify your track somehow to avoid the sulphur gas.
If you smell and feel too much gas, you can make a simple gas mask by spreading a little vinegar to a handkerchief, it will help you to pass the area, oxygen mask is not compulsory, it is optional.

To pass the volcanic zone of Damavand you may use a vinegar mask!

This Video Clips showes the new activity of the volcano on 19 June 2007.

Warning
Without sufficient equipment and oxygen mask, it is not safe to go close to the new vent for photography or any other reason, becouse if the wind direction changes, you get caught in the poison gas.

Volcano

Volcano Damavand Iran
Located approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Tehran, Mt. Damavand is an impressive stratovolcano that reaches 5,670 meters (18,598 feet) in elevation. Part of the Alborz Mountain Range that borders the Caspian Sea to the north, Damavand is a young volcano that has formed mostly during the Holocene Epoch (over approximately the last 10,000 years). The western flank of the volcano includes solidified lava flows with flow levees—“walls” formed as the side edges of flowing lava cooled rapidly, forming a chute that channeled the hotter, interior lava. Two such flows with well-defined levees are highlighted by snow on the mountainside.
Damavand is the highest peak in Iran and the highest volcano in the Middle East. The mountain and its surrounding areas are popular hiking, climbing, and skiing destinations. While no historic eruptions of the volcano are recorded, hot springs on the flanks of the volcano and fumaroles (steam vents) in the summit crater suggest that a hot or cooling magma body is still present beneath the volcano. This continuing activity, while minor, indicates a dormant rather than extinct volcano.

Volcano Damavand, Iran
ERUPTIVE HISTORY
Location: 35.951N , 52.109E
Elevation: 18,602 feet (5670 m)
Its 5671-m summit is the highest point in the Middle East.
Damavand volcano towers dramatically 50 km to the NE above Iran's capital city of Tehran. The 5670-m-high stratovolcano is the highest volcano in the Middle East and was constructed above the southern rim of a 9-km-wide caldera.
The well-preserved summit crater of the trachyandesite-to-trachytic volcano contains a small lake, and young lava flows from summit and flank vents cover the western side of the volcano. The earliest lava flows are thought to post-date roughly 38,500 year old terraces. The absence of Pleistocene glacial erosion suggests that the main stage of edifice construction occurred during the Holocene (Catalog of Active Volcanoes of the World). No historical eruptions are known, but hot springs are located on the volcano's flanks, and fumaroles are found at the summit crater. (Description courtesy of the SI/USGS Global Volcanism Program)
The natural beauty of Mt. Damavand
A dormant volcano with a narrow summit. Location Alborz Mountains, Iran. Height 5671. First climbed W.T Thomson, 1837. The seasoned traveler in Iran is so used to seeing gaunt, rugged precipice , jagged peaks and bare deserts, that the sight of Damavand is a relief and surprise to the eye. Visible From many kilometers away, thought it is surrounded on every side by the peaks and ridges of the albroz, its superior height and singular outline compel attention. It is not surprising that such a prominent mountain should figure in the national epic of Iran.

For more information on Shahnama, click HERE Written around 1000AD, the great Iranian poet, Ferdowsi Tousi, relates in his epic Shahnama how the tyrant Zohak is overthrown by the young Feridun and imprisoned in chains to die in a cavern on the slops of Damavand. Local legend asserts that his groans may still be heard on this slopes. For more information on Mt.
