Damavand Acclimatization

In summer trekking to Damavand  is not difficult in technical terms. But physically it is a hard climb. The main difficulties are Damavand Weather, sulfur smokes and the acclimatization. The air gets thinner with less oxygen as you gain altitude. To increase the chance of success and lower the risk of AMS and to enjoy a safe hike to this giant volcano it is necessary to have a proper acclimatization for this mountain. The best campsites to acclimatize for those who intend to trek from south route are Camp 1 Polour Hut at 2250 m and Camp3 Bargah New Hut at 4250 m.

Difficulty of Damavand Mountain

Volcano Damavand is well-known for its mild trekking ridges. Ascending this 5671 meters (18,605 feet) gigantic volcano is technically moderate but physically it is a tough ascend and requires a very good physical fitness. The major trekking difficulties are Damavand Weather, acclimatization and the sulfur smokes. Challenging Damavand in summer is similar to Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Mt Everest Base Camp. But Damavand Winter Climb is a quite different story, it is very difficult and may be compared to 7000 meters summits or higher.

Damavand First Camp Polour

Damavand first campsite is called Polour Hut. This mountain resort is the best starting point for trekking, climbing and ski touring  Damavand in Iran either towards the classic south route or the west route. Polur complex resort is a shortcut to Damawand and is a suitable place for accommodation and acclimatization. Polor Resort is made by Iran Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation (also called Mountain Climbing Federation of Iran) and it is administered by the same organization.

Damavand Mountain is standing 80 Km driving distances North-East of the capital city Tehran. It is situated in the central part of the Alborz Mountains on the southern seashore of the Caspian Sea in the district of Mazandaran Iran. Damavand Mountain in Winter
Damavand is covered by snow in winter. The summit is snow-capped several months a year. But in spring and autumn only the upper parts are white.  Ice and hardened-snow remain all the year on Damavand North Face Glaciers. The mountain is an excellent symmetrical cone volcano with a narrow summit. It looks like Mount Fuji (Fujiyama) in Japan. Damavand  lies about 80 kilometers driving distance north-east of Tehran in the northern Persian plateau. The giant white peak and its beautiful cloud cap are the most attractive sight of Iran mountains.

Damavand Trekking Season
Summer trekking season for Damavand  is from mid June to mid September. Generally in this period Damavand South Route footpaths are free of snow, the weather is usually calm and climbers may go up by 4WD cars as far as Damavand Base Camp, ( second camp or Goosfand-Sara).

Climbers with ordinary mountaineering experience are strongly advised to try this mountain in this trekking season. Damavand mountain shelters and refuges are very crowded during Iranian weekends and holidays. Best starting days is Saturday. Avoid trekking in Iranian weekends (Thursday and Friday).
