Damavand Pool
Damavand is placed in the middle of Elborz Mountains approx 60 Km south of Caspian Sea. Damawand giant volcano has a small glacier at its crater summit which is usually frozen but in a hot summer it may melt and make some water to form a small pool, also called the summit lake.

The pool is located at about 5,650 meters above sea level which it is the highest pool in Middle East and is ranked No 9 in the World Highest Lake Ranking. Due to freezing temp at Damavand Summit, only few mountaineers have the chance to see water in this pool because it is an icy pool rather than a water lake. If you climb the mountain in summer, do not miss this natural phenomenon. But be careful that the water in this pool is not drinking water. This pool cannot qualify as a true permanent lake because it will disappear during the cold season and it's too small. Generaly it is a small frozen pool.

Fuji-Damavand

Fujiyama or Damavand this is the question?!
There is a nice image on the internet of a volcano with a beautiful lenticular cap clouds on its summit with no data about the title, location or the photographer, some Iranian believe this picture belongs to Damawand Volcano in Iran!

Fuji or Damavand ?!

If you have close look at this photo you will see a flat area (perhaps a small town near) and a lake at the lower part of the mountain. Remember there is not such a view closed to Mt Damawand in Iran. Read more in Damavand Info.

So this picture most probably belongs to Mt Fuji (Fujiyama or Fujisan 3776 m) Japan's highest peak. Fuji looks like the Iranian summit and it is so similar and almost twin sister of Damavand! Due to this similarity, some people are confused and not able to distinguish between the two volcanoes.

Damavand-Crater

The highest volcano in the Asia and the second highest in Northern hemisphere is Damavand. It is situated in the middle of Alborz Mountains in Iran. This giant dormant volcano was formed during the Holocene geologic epoch and its last eruption was about 6-10 thousands years ago.

This young volcano is almost a symmetrical cone shape composite stratovolcano and has a large crater whit a diameter about 200 - 400 meters across.

Mount Damavend Crater

The crater is made of nearly pure sulphur and yellow rocks which surrounds the peak. The crater is approx 30m deep mostly covered by snow and ice and forms a small permanent glacier.

Note
The altitude of Damawand is 5671 meters. Read also Damavand v Kunlun (in Tibet 7,167 m).


Warning
There is big vent closed to the crater exhaling an awesome amount of sulphuric gas, volcanic smoke and hot steam with pestiferous smell which makes problem for climbers. It is not safe to go near this poisonous sulphuric area because if the wind changes its direction you would be in serious problem.

Frozen-Animals-Damavand

When you ascend to Damavand summit you may see few bodies of different animals just around the crater near the south peak. These frozen animals are quite similar to Egyptian mummies but without any bandages! The remains have been there for a long time, perhaps for about 20 or 30 years.

There is no clear idea about the cause of dead, perhaps they have died because of some disease, sulfur gas, hunger or frozen to dead due to freezing temperature. The bodies belongs to animals such as ordinary sheep, wild sheep (gazelle), dog and wolf. Due to the cold and freezing temp at the peak and also the sulfur gas in the area, these bodies will remain for many more years.

Popular mountains for hiking trekking and mountaineering in Zagros Mountains in Iran with numerous summits above 4000m. Mt Dena is one of most recommended mountain for trekking.

Dena Mountain Chain Mt Dena is standing in the Zagros Mountains South West of Iran. It is about 70 Km long and has about 50 peaks above 4000 meters. The highest summit of Mount Dena is called Bizhan III (or Ghash Mastan, Ghachmastan) and it is 4535 m high. Dena Mountain Chain is located between three Iranian provinces, Esfahan, Kohgiluyeh and Chaharmahal Bakhtiary.

- Bizhan I (Mash) 4340 m
- Bizhan II (Borj Asmani, Seh Ghopeh) 4350 m

Hovzdal Summit
Howzdal or Dena Peak 4350 meters Central Howz Dall (also called Dena peak) is the most popular peak of the mountain for trekking and mountaineering. The favorite route for this peak starts from Sisakht Town and goes through a beautiful valley called Boz Kosh Valley on the south face of the mountain. This route has a shelter/refuge called Cheshme Pouneh (or Cheshmeh Pidani) at altitude 3800 m, about 1.5 to 2 hours before reaching the summit.
