Persian Calendar and Holiday Crowds
17 September 2010 posted by MDG
Damavand Iran 5671m is a favorite summit in persia, this fantastic peak has also gained its popularity rapidly among foreign climbers recently and is visited by numerous number of tourists each year. The most visited side of Damavand mountain is the south route, because of its excellent mountain huts and easy accessibility from the capital Tehran. The popularity of this enormous volcano bring about some crowd problem to the mountaineers during holidays and weekends specially in summer climbing season.
Thursday (half day) and Friday are weekend
Saturday is a working day and start of the week
To enjoy Damavand Volcan or any cultural or eco trip to Persia it is highly recommended to avoid the unwanted summer Persian holidays and it is essential to have some info about the Persian calendar and holidays to encounter the least possible mountain crowd problem on the campsites, huts, hotels and road traffic in summer.
The excess of public holidays in persian calendar is a major problem, a considerable number of unofficial holidays are added each year to the national holidays making it worse. The main cause of this problem is the use of three different calendar systems which makes some major holidays and long weekends:
1 - The Solar calendar "Hejri-Shamsi" is the main calendar.
2 - The Lunar calendar " Hejri-Qamari" is for religious events.
3 - The Gregorian calendar is for international events like May Day.

Tips
- Iranian weekends are Thursday and Friday.
- Keep away from weekends, specially long weekends.
- Start your programme on Saturday to Monday.
- Finish your itinerary before the weekend.
- Holidays are not recommended for Damavand tours in any route, some times also not suitable for any kind of travel in Iran.
- The Haraz main road is the only road to Damavand Mountain, on holidays there could be a big road traffic.
Iranian (Persian) new year Nowruz
The Iranian year or Solar Hejri year begins about 21 March of each Gregorian calendar and ends about 20 March of the next year. The first day of the Persian calendar is also the beginning of the greatest festival and holidays in Iran, Afghanistan and surrounding countries, it is called Novruz ( now = new) and ruz = day, meaning "new day").
Nowruz is the traditional Iranian (Persian) new year holiday celebrated in Iran which marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the Persian Calendar. It is celebrated on the first day of spring in northern hemisphere. It usually occurs on the March 21 or the previous/following day. Nowruz is referred to as an Eid festival.
