Ski Mountaineering and Snowboarding Mt Damavand Iran

7 Days Ski Mountaineering and Snowboard

Day 1 - Arrival Day
Transfer by car/bus directly from IKA airport to Camp1 Polour 2270 m.
you just rest there for acclimatization, no hard exercises, and free from Tehran pollution, over night at Polur.

Day 2 - Starting Day
Transfer by car towards Camp2 Base, as far as car can go, and then walk to Camp2 Base, over night at base camp.

Day 3 - Toward Camp3
Slow walk on foot or on ski to Camp3 New Hut, over night at camp3.

Day 4 - Summit day
we atempt climbing (at 5 or 6 AM) towards Damavand Summit ,
and then in return ski down to camp3, over night at camp3.

Day 5 - Return day
Ski down back to camp1 and over night at Camp1 Polor.

Day 6 - Reserved day
Reserved day for bad weather or team being exhausted to go as planed.

Day 7 - Return day
To Damavand Termal Spring located in Larijan village, and then return back to your hotel in Tehran.

Common Mistakes Part2

In this topic you can find some other reasons which are the main cause of unsuccessful attempts to Damavand summit and our suggested ways to increase your chance of success to the peak.
If you have the feeling of exhaustion, weakness, lack of energy and disorientation to go ahead and continue the ascend, the followings could be the main cause of your problem. To overcome this and for adaptation to the new environment, just before atempting the mountain, we suggest to a have a good rest after your flight. Camp1 Polour ans Camp3 New Hut are ideal places for your rest and accomodation. Read more in part1.

Jet Lag
After a long flight or a long journey across different time zones, jet lag is a cause of being exhausted and excessive tiredness. If you are coming from a country with more than 3 hours difference in time zones, you may need one extra day rest for adaptation to the new environment.

Biological Clock
The natural mechanism that controls the cyclical physiological activities of organisms.
You may ask yourself, "what time is it by your internal biological clock ?!" The answer is, "it take some time that a person can biologically perform a certain function."
It is not recommended to do tough exercises while your internal biological clock indicates that the body is in the resting mode, it is quite wrong to attempt climbing when the biological clock of your body says it is sleeping time!

Biorhythms
Sometimes there could be more factors that you feel you are not in a good mood for climbing, factor such as biorhythm cycles. Biorhythm is an attempt to predict various aspects of a person's life through simple mathematical cycles, your life is affected by rhythmic biological cycles which affect your ability in various domains, such as physical, mental, and emotional activity. These cycles begin at birth and continue throughout life; thus, by modeling them mathematically, a person's level of ability can be predicted from day to day.

Dizin is the the most famous ski resort, the largest piste and the best winter sport center of Iran. Located near Chalous Road in the north west of Tehran in Alborz Mountain Range, it is also the famous grass-ski centre for summer sport activities. This resort is the best place for parctice and acclimatization for skiers before trying the giant Damavand peak.

How to go to Disin
The only access to the resort is by road. You may reach the area by two differnt road, the first one is longer but a safer way.

Via Chalus (Chaloos) Road 126 km
1- Tehran> (Resalat Highway, Mosala Metro Station)> Tehran-Karaj Highway> Chalous Road> Dizin junction> Dizin Resort.
Or
Via Shemsak Road about 55 km
2- Tehran> (Resalat Highway Baqeri Junction)> Tehranpars 4th Sq.> Gardaneh Ghochak> Lavasanat> Oshoun Fasham Road> Shemshak City> Dizin Resort.

Winter Warning
- Dizin is only accessible by road, after a heavy snowfall, snow chains are necessary for cars.
- The road between Shemshak and Dizin which is about 12 km long may be closed in winter after a heavt snow due to avalanch risk.
- In bad weather and stormy condition, bad visibility or darkness, it is not safe to ski without a reliable navigation unit like a handheld GPS receiver.

Shemshak ski resort is located in the middle of Alborz Mountains Iran, it is one of the best down hill track for wild ski mountaineering and freestyle snowboarding. It has excellent powder snowfall in winter, a suitable place for advanced skier and snowboard lovers before trying Damavand. It is the second largest piste in Iran after Dizin resort.

GPS Track 2
Useful for Mountaineering, Ski and Snowboard

There is a descend (return) route on the south face of Damavand Mountain called Shen Ski (soft type of soil), it is a comfortable way to go down especially for tierd mountaineers who return from a tough climb, also it is the best down hill track for wild ski mountaineering and freestyle snowboarding.

This descend route is located between Damavand summit 5671m and the Camp3 New Hut 4250m, the covered area has a mild climbing slope without rocks and guideposts, it is the easiest return way of the mountain, in good visibility you can find your way back easily.

This GPS track file is ideal for:
A- Descend in Summer
Climbers who have summited successfully and prefer an easier way down to avoid rocky parts, suitable when the valleys are free from ice and snow and the the ground is covered with soft sands.

Please remember this track is slightly different from ascend route and is not recommended for climbing up! It is suitable for descend only. (The green line on the following map shows the ascend track).

B- Ski Mountaineering and Snowboarding in Winter
The best track for Ski Mountaineers and snowboard lovers to enjoy 3000 meters long distance and 1400 meters altitude downhill ski in snow during the winter and go down from the peak to campsite3.

Danger Zone is an area which is located between the Fake Summit 5400m and the real Peak 5671m on the south face of Damavand. In an ordinerary weather and good visibility it is an easy part of the mountain, but in poor visibility and bad weather it is difficult part of the route.

The area is the most incident part of the mountain which many accidents has happened there, mountaineers lose their way easily when they return down from the summit due to bad visibility, darkness, stormy and violent weather.

This area looks like a desert, without signs or rocks, it has a mild climbing slope with only few guideposts, you may not find the guideposts in bad visibility, you can ascend easily but you may not find your way back.

Warning
In bad weather, foggy condition and poor visibility, it is highly recommended not to go upper than fake summit without a reliable navigation equipment such as a handheld GPS receiver.

Economy Outlook in Iran
Removal of Subsidies and Uncertain Economic Situation in Iran

As the international sanctions against Iran being widely imposed and the decision by the government to remove subsidies on many goods such as petroleum products, electricity, water, wheat, milk, rice etc, we are expecting a huge price raise and high inflation rate for the next few months.

The removal of subsidies will cause a great raise in all prices in iran, this will effect most costs for travel and tourism too, including for Mt Damavand climbs and caltural tours in Iranian cities.

Already the government has raised 30% increase for the domestic airline tickets this week and it is expected to announced further new increase to the internal tickets due to annual inflation rate which usually takes effect every year on 21 March (Iranian New Year).

It's not immediately clear how high this new inflation will go, but it may take effect from October 2010 to March 2011.

So kindly be advised due to this uncertain economic situation here, we may not be able to offer you precise costs and prices for some travel services at the moment.
