damavand-summit

Summit
Mt Damavand shape is conic like many other volcanos, it looks like Fujiyama in Japan, but much greater, with the altitude 5671 meters and a crater diameter approx 200 to 400m across and 30m deep, the crater has a permenants glacier which melts in hot summers and forms a small pool with little water. There is no shelter or refuge at the peak, in case you want to challenge 7000 m or higher altitude you can make you own tent for acclamatisation somewhere safe and away from sulfuric gases in or around the crater.

The summit is made of lots of yellow sulfurous rocks and pumice stones, usually cowerd by ice and snow. This stratovolcano has some sign of vlocanic activty at the top, a big vent is formed in 2007 just bellow the crater with high fumarolic activity, through which hot sulphurous gases emerge, it releases an extent amount of smoke and hot sulphuric gases.

Day2 Summit and Return Day
How to to tackle the summit? The south route is not technical, it is just a long and tough trek with a moderate climbing slop, do not carry heavy stuff with yourself, you can leave them behind in New Hut or your tent , take only necessary things with you, in summer many climbers use this way, perhaps you could find a group which suits your speed, if you are not sure use a reliable mountain guide.

Wake up at 4 am, have a complete breakfast and drink few cups of coffe or tea, see the weather if it sounds good, start your ascend at 5 AM, use the proper foot tracks, throughout the course drink water frequently and eat some sweet or chocolate and biscuit, depending to your physical fitness it takes 5 to 7 hours to reach the top with a slow and steady trek.

Tips for the Summit Day
- Before the start, double check up all your necessary gears.
- See the weather forecast before you start.
- Take a short rest every hour during the way.
- Do not rest more than 5 minutes per break.
- Use the footprints, if you are not sure use a guide.
- Do not start at night, preferred starting time is 5 AM.
- Remember from camp3 upwards there is no water, food or shelter/refuge.

Food & Drink for the Summit Day
- Have a good breakfast plus tea or coffee.
- Eat some sweet, chocolate, cookie, biscuit, during the trek.
- Drink water frequently, you need at least 1.5 letters of water per person.

damavand-elevation

Elevation
Elevation of Mt Damavand Iran
Many sources indicate that the altitude of Mt Damavand is 5671m.
But the Wikipedia insists that the elevation of this volcano is only 5610m which I believe this is not correct. I had measured it before and I knew it was more that 5610m, but after reading this article, I made my new measurement on Friday 31 Aug 2007 at 11 AM.

Simultaneously, with two different brand of hand held GPS units, one Magellan GPS 315 and the other Garmin GPS Rino 120, by going to the top of all boulders and big rocks around the summit crater, I noticed all of them above 5610 M ! This is the result of my new measurement for the highest rock located on the south face which I beleive is summit of this mountain:

Summit Coordinate
Latitude 35-57-19 North
Longitude 52-06-37 East

Summit Altitude
By Magellan GPS 315 ---------- 5630 m - 18471 ft
By Garmin GPS Rino 120-------5645 m -18520 ft

If we assume the max tolerance of GPS units are +/-15M, in the worst case, the height is above 5610 M, ( ie 5630 - 15 = 5615 m ),
and for best and optimal the elevation is 5660 m -18569 ft or more,
( ie 5645 + 15 = 5660 m).

Although I believe the hand held GPS unit results may not be so accurate to refer to as a reliable reference, but I think it is more reliable that what is mentioned in Wikipedia! It worth to do some accurate measurements on the mountain with some modern and sophisticated equipments by some experts (and not newcomers)!
